Decorating your home well tends to be expensive, but with these tips you can decorate your home while sticking to your budget.
1. SHOWCASE COLLECTIONS
Arrange and display items you already have, like antique glassware and postcards from the places you’ve visited, to create the look of more space and organization in your home. Display your collection in bare areas with the help of simple shelves. If you want, add a pop of color to your collection with brightly painted shelves. However, less is more when it comes to these displays, so remember to pair it down and keep it simple.
2. PAINT THE FRONT DOOR
Painting your front door, or any door in your home, can be a quick and inexpensive way to freshen up your home’s look. With the exterior of your home, try to pick a bright, eye-catching color that flows with the existing color of your home. The doors inside your home, however, should be painted more calm, muted colors that match the surrounding paint on the walls.
3. REARRANGE
Moving around the furniture in your home can easily change the look and feel and costs you nothing but some energy.
With smaller spaces of your home, try moving larger pieces of furniture towards the walls, which can add more room and make the area feel larger. In larger spaces of your home, don’t be afraid to spread some furniture out while still maintaining a sense of flow throughout the space. Try different arrangements until you find something that suits your tastes and needs. Even moving smaller pieces of furniture around can make a big impact.
4. CREATE AN ACCENT WALL
Creating an accent wall can add to the dynamics of a room and is extremely easy and inexpensive to create. The general rule of thumb for stylish accent walls is to pick the wall that draws your eye. It’s also a good idea to pick bold colors that you can repeat throughout the room with existing decor and furniture.
And don’t just stop at one color! Have fun and put your personal touch into it. You can add stripes, metallic paints, or even go along with the current wallpaper trend to make it even more personalized.
5. OR A GALLERY WALL
Frame those old photos you have stashed away and display them around your home. This is where having an eclectic collection comes in handy – you can stick to having the same style frame, or even put a variety of frames together to make it even more attention-grabbing. A gallery wall can fill up those plain walls in your kitchen, living room, hallways, etc. and create a much more dynamic feel while keeping the style of your home consistent. Your framed pieces don’t need to be anything expensive or fancy. Decorate your home by printing out your favorite nature scenes or simple photos of amazing vacation spots can add life to any room.
And, of course, if you’re feeling crafty – frame some of your own works!
6. TRANSFORM THOSE GLASS BOTTLES
Instead of tossing out wine bottles or old mason jars you rarely use, repurpose the glassware into brand new decor to decorate your home. Paint the glassware fun colors and decorate to your taste with stickers, flowers, or simple ribbon and display in different areas around your home. Not only can glass bottles serve as decorations, but they can also work as utensil holders or vases for fresh (or fake) plants.
7. REPURPOSE OLD FURNITURE
Transform that old chair collecting dust in your basement into a new and unique piece of furniture. Repurposing furniture you already have can give any room a little flair and personality. For example, you can turn an old wooden chair into a simple side table with a fresh coat of paint and some creativity.
8. PLANTS
Fake and fresh plants can give your home a boost and fill any space with a lively atmosphere. Plants are extremely versatile, especially fake ones, and can be placed in any empty space. Add dimension and brighten any room by adding a few plants here and there. Mix and match different types together and group them for a more decorative feel.
Fresh plants look amazing as decorations and have been proven to help your overall well-being. If you don’t have a green-thumb, use fake plants to liven up your home – it’ll still feel as though you’re bringing nature inside. At BHG, we feel as though a pop of green never hurt anyone.
9. GIVE LIFE TO STORAGE AREAS
If you have built-in bookcases or simple storage areas, giving them new life can immediately change the feel of your home. Add stick-on wallpaper or a bold paint color to the inside backing of a bookcase to create depth and transform it from plain to stylish. You can also paint the backs of built in bookcases for more dimension.
Other storage places like simple end tables can be freshened up with a coat of paint that flows well with the surrounding color in the room. Giving some color to these storage areas can transform them into unique decorative pieces.
10. GO THRIFT SHOPPING
If you need better furniture or decor, give thrift shops and estate sales a try before hitting the furniture and decor stores to better fit your budget. There can be many gems at a thrift shop or estate sale that can leave you with a unique item for a low price. Second-hand furniture and decor are usually much less expensive compared to brand new ones.
Items from a thrift shop or estate sale may not be in perfect condition, but a few nicks and scratches can give an item character. If flaking paint or scratches do make the item look drabby, consider a simple coat of paint and a little TLC. Besides the tips above, you may also want to consider asking your real estate agent for some inexpensive decorating tips. Many of our real estate agents have experience in interior design or have a knack for it and would be happy to help you freshen up your home.
